Six Mistakes to Avoid When Remodelling Your Kitchen

"kitchen"Some of the most popular types of home improvements are based in the kitchen and the reason for this is that they are often the most profitable. If you want to boost the value of your home, the kitchen is usually the best place to start. For some reason, there’s nothing like a beautiful kitchen when it comes to motivating people to put an offer down.

It is important to realise however that for the same reason, the kitchen is the one part of your home that you don’t want to damage. A bad job is just as capable of decreasing the value of your home as a good job is of increasing it. Should you be planning on doing a little bit of kitchen remodelling, here are the six most important mistakes to avoid.

Not Enough Counter Space

A lack of counter space is one of the most annoying kitchen design mistakes that you can make. It not only makes cooking significantly more difficult, it can also lead to a much more cluttered look when every piece of available counter space is constantly covered. Therefore put ample counter space at the top of your list of new kitchen must haves.

Not Enough Storage Space

As well as counter space, don’t underestimate the importance of storage space. Your new kitchen must provide you with enough space to store all of your food, cutlery and cooking utensils. Fail to do so and your weekly grocery shopping is going to be forever restricted to what you actually have space for.

A Poor Kitchen Triangle

The first thing that any kitchen designer learns about is the kitchen triangle. The kitchen triangle is essentially a fancy way of describing the space between the three most used areas of a kitchen, the fridge, the cooker and the sink.

A good kitchen triangle is one in which unrestricted access is offered to all three. There should be no obstacles to walk around and if you have a large kitchen, the space between them should be kept to a minimum.

A Lack of Lighting

Before considering how you are going to light your new kitchen, it’s important to be aware of the types of lighting that you need. Though everyone understands the need for general illumination, many forget about the small matter of task lighting. Food preparation areas, such as the sink and stove, should all come complete with their own source of light.

Too Many Trends

Clever kitchen designs are those that don’t take too much notice of the latest trends. Just because something is in this year, that doesn’t mean you’re not going to despise it a few years from now. And when it comes to kitchen remodelling, a long term view is an important one to take. Take special care with strong colours, they tend to go out of fashion fast.

A Lack of Durability

Finally, we have the small matter of durability. Kitchen fixtures of any kind are always prone to wear and tear. And when you fail to choose durable materials, that wear and tear can start to become noticeable pretty fast. If you’re looking to knock a few dollars of the price of your remodelling job, don’t take it off the materials that you use. Low quality countertops, tables and even cabinets tend to look pretty shoddy, pretty fast.
